Video | UMass DC Jared Keyte Press Conference

UMass defensive coordinator Jared Keyte spoke with reporters after the Minutemen's fourth practice of the spring on Tuesday.

UMass defensive coordinator Jared Keyte said the Minutemen are beginning to establish a stronger foundation this spring after a challenging 2025 season, pointing to improved speed, physicality and overall cohesion through the first four practices.

With a roster that has been significantly reshaped, Keyte emphasized that the biggest difference from a year ago is familiarity and connection, both within the staff and among the players. That continuity has shown up in the way the defense practices and communicates, while veteran leaders have helped set the standard for a group that includes a number of new additions.

“This is our roster now,” he said. “We’ve recruited this roster.”

Keyte also highlighted the importance of situational football and player development this spring, stressing the need for the defense to process quickly and play with discipline as the system continues to be installed. He added that increased competition, particularly against an improved offense, has helped elevate the intensity on both sides of the ball.
