UMass Week 1 Depth Chart Released
The Minutemen have released their two-deep for Saturday's opener against Temple
While a couple of key starting positions had already been announced, including quarterback, on Monday, UMass released its depth chart for this Saturday’s season-opener against Temple.
We already knew Brandon Rose would be listed as the starting quarterback and Derek Morris would be the starting kicker, which had been announced previously.
Still, we got some definitive answers to some other positions, although depth charts can often tell incomplete stories.
At most positions, several players will see time throughout the game and who actually runs out on the field first matters more about personnel groupings than anything.
The other offensive skill positions - Rocko Griffin, Brandon Hood and Juwaun Price at running back, a top six of Jacquon Gibson, T.Y. Harding, Jake McConnachie, Donnie Gray, Tyree Kelly and Kezion Dia-Johnson at receiver and Reece Adkins and Max Dowling at tight end - were about what we expected.
The depth chart at offensive line did shed some light on a group that has seen some shuffling throughout practice, dating back to the spring and now training camp with the arrival of some reinforcements.
There was never going to be a real shock simply because we knew we didn’t know exactly how those spots would shake out. Although we did take note of Mao Glynn II getting the nod at right guard over Kyle Brown and Luke Painton being with the ones over Zachary Franks.
We were quite sure we’d see Benjamin Roy at center, Sullivan Weidman at left guard and Ryan Mosesso at right tackle, which we did, but Michael Entwistle’s absence from the two-deep did catch our eye as well.
No real surprises on defense, especially when considering we expect to see almost everybody on the defensive two-deep see some time, especially in sub-packages. For instance, linebacker Tyler Martin, Derrieon Craig and safety DD Snyder are all listed as backups, but that highlights the depth of this year’s team as much as anything.
