UMass Signs Experienced WR Donnie Gray In Transfer Portal
The former Northwestern receiver brings a new element to the room for the Minutemen
UMass football officially announced new wide receiver signing Donnie Gray today in what has been a jam-packed Transfer Portal period.
After officially announcing the signings of tight end Matthew Ogunniyi about a week ago, Juwaun Price yesterday, and the announcement of Brand Hood imminent, the running back and tight end rooms seem to be complete.
Offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian and his recruiting staff have shifted their focus to the wide receiver portion of the depth chart.
Gray is a local New England kid, from New Haven, Conn., and went to high school about 15 minutes north of Amherst at Deerfield Academy.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound pounder spent the past three seasons at Northwestern. In Evanston, he was coached by Bajakian, who served as Wildcats’ offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023.
The two are now reunited in Amherst.
Gray wasn’t a regular contributor for Northwestern, catching two passes in six appearances last season and only four catches for his career. But his experience and ability has convinced head coach Joe Harasymiak to take a chance on him in the portal.
He played cornerback in high school, on top of being a highly-touted wide receiver.
Off the field, Gray is a workhorse in the classroom, winning Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2023.
The Minutemen proved their depth at the wide receiver position throughout the spring with guys like T.Y. Harding, Jacquon Gibson, Tyree Kelly and more. Now, they add Gray to that list.
