UMass Officially Announces Max Warner As OC
The Minutemen's new offensive coordinator has experience and success in the MAC
UMass has officially announced the hiring of Max Warner as offensive coordinator, confirming a move that was reported last month.
Head coach Joe Harasymiak formally introduced Warner, an experienced play caller who most recently worked at Toledo and Bowling Green.
“I am excited to officially announce the addition of Max Warner as our program’s offensive coordinator,” Harasymiak said in a statement released by the University. “Max bolsters our program with his proven track record of productive and innovative offenses, player development and program growth. His experience will be a tremendous asset to the Massachusetts football family.
“In our conversations, it became clear he aligns with our culture and that he desires to be part of what we are building. His success at multiple levels speaks to the strength of his offensive philosophy and his commitment to team building and we’re confident he will help us take the next steps as a program.”
Warner most recently served as an offensive analyst at Toledo during the 2025 season. Prior to that, he spent more than three years at Bowling Green, serving as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from January 2022 through March 2025. He also handled play-calling duties for the Falcons.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Massachusetts football program and want to thank head coach Joe Harasymiak and athletic director Ryan Bamford for the opportunity,” Warner said in a statement released by the University. “With the energy inside the football program and the resources committed to our student-athletes, this felt like the perfect place for me and my family.
“The work has already begun and I’m excited to be a part of the culture we are building both on and off the field.”
During Warner’s tenure at Bowling Green, the Falcons reached three consecutive bowl games, including appearances in the 2022 and 2023 Quick Lane Bowls and the 2024 68 Ventures Bowl. Bowling Green finished 5-3, 5-3 and 6-2 in MAC play during those seasons.
Offensively, Bowling Green showed steady year-over-year improvement under Warner’s direction. The Falcons averaged 334 yards and 23.5 points per game in 2022, followed by 336 yards and 26.2 points per game in 2023. That growth continued in 2024, when Bowling Green averaged 377.5 yards per game and 27.1 points per game.
Warner also played a key role in the development of quarterback Connor Bazelak during the 2024 season. Bazelak completed 66.9 percent of his passes, threw for 3,044 yards and 18 touchdowns, and ranked among the MAC and national leaders in multiple passing categories.
Warner’s impact extended beyond the quarterback position as tight end Harold Fannin Jr. emerged as one of the most productive players in the country. Fannin set all-time FBS records for a tight end with 117 receptions and 1,555 receiving yards on the season and tied for most receptions in a game (17) , becoming Bowling Green’s first consensus All-American while earning MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Before joining Bowling Green, Warner served as head coach at Bloomingdale High School in Valrico, Florida, from 2016-18, guiding the program to two state playoff appearances. His coaching background also includes stops at Virginia Tech, Fort Hays State, North Carolina Wesleyan, Lakeland College and multiple high school programs.
Warner played quarterback at Millikin University and earned his bachelor’s degree there in 2006 before completing a master’s degree at Fort Hays State in 2009. He and his wife, Kaitlyn, have three daughters.
