UMass Announces Official Signing Of Star Edge Rusher
One-time West Virginia signee Romando Johnson rounds out the Minutemen's front seven for the 2025 recruiting class.
On December 4th, West Virginia announced Romando Johnson as one of its new edge rushers for the Moutaineers’ 2025 recruiting class.
Johnson enrolled at the university and attended spring camp, but due to unknown reasons, he entered the transfer portal on April 16, according to 247sports.
On June 24th, UMass Football officially announced the signing of the Lauderhill, Fla., native. He is expected to be the final roster addition before training camp rolls around.
Johnson received 41 offers prior to committing for the Mountaineers. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder, received offers from Tennessee, Penn State, Miami, Tulane and many more.
The former Monarch High School player has a unique combination of lightning speed and a massive frame. He has proven his ability to slip right past any left guard who tries to stop him, while possessing a passion for the game that is obvious throughout his film.
Last season, Johnson helped his team to a 7-4 record while recording 36 tackles, a forced fumble and 15 tackles for loss. He also tallied seven sacks and 16 hurries throughout the season, warranting 247Sports to rank the three-star recruit No. 58 nationally at edge and the No. 105 overall recruit in Florida
He joins an impressive room of edge rushers with the likes of Josh Nobles, David Onuoha and fellow late freshman commit Jerry Washington. Nyeem Wartman, Johnson’s new defensive line coach, has become a recruiting gem for the Minutemen in both the transfer portal and the youth.
It will be interesting to see where and when Johnson slots in on Wartman’s line throughout the 2025 season.
