UMass Adds Speed, Size & Athleticism In Transfer TE
The Minutemen got better with the addition of former Rutgers tight end Matthew Ogunniyi on Friday.
The biggest need position on the offensive side of the ball for UMass coming into this Spring Portal period was - and is - running back.
After that, though, the most important offensive need was tight end.
The Minutemen addressed that position Friday, when Matthew Ogunniyi announced his commitment to UMass.
The 6-foot-5, 236-pounder comes to Amherst from Rutgers, where he played in one game as a freshman in 2024. He obviously has familiarity with Joe Harasymiak, who was at Rutgers until accepting the head coaching job in Amherst back in December, along with multiple other current staff members in Amherst, who were in Piscataway.
Ogunniyi obviously brings size, but he’s also a true threat as a pass-catcher and actually played some wide receiver for C.H. Flowers High School in Upper Marlboro, Md. He was also a standout sprinter for his high school’s track team, so he’ll bring speed as well.
And we’re talking true speed, not speed relative to a tight end.

That combination of size, speed and athleticism led to some big-time opportunities coming out of high school. Prior to committing to the Scarlet Knights, Ogunniyi had offers from schools like West Virginia and Texas A&M.
And now he’ll bring that combination to Amherst, where he very well could develop into one of UMass’ most lethal offensive weapons.
How quickly may that occur won’t be clear until at least several more months, but it’s obvious the Minutemen’s offensive talent improved on Friday.
