Coach | UMass Landed "Gem" In OL Transfer Bradley Kamga
UMass bolstered the future of its offensive line via the Transfer Portal with the former LIU player
UMass Football has found its gem up front with Bradley Kamga. The 6-foot-2, 280-pounder announced his commitment to the Minutemen on May 10th, creating a sense of excitement for what the future has in store.
In the offensive line department, UMass got back one starter in Ryan Mosesso, but added experience with Kyle Brown out of Dartmouth, and Zachary Franks from Duke. With Kamga, they are getting a player with raw talent, and an incredibly high ceiling.
“The good thing about him was that he didn’t have a lot of football experience,” Kamga’s high school coach, Dameon Powell, told Minuteman Command. “Bradley only started one year for me and then started at Long Island. His upside is humongous.”
Kamga didn’t have the vast experience other linemen might have, but his rise to relevance has been smooth and rapid.
Kamga went to C.H. Flowers High School, where he played with recent UMass signee Matthew Ogunniyi. The two led Powell’s squad to a 13-1 record their junior year, as well as an MPSSAA-4A title game in Maryland.
With his size, Powell had him doing more than just football activities to maximize his strength. Kamga competed in track and field during his last three years of high school. He threw 136 feet and 11 inches in the discus, ranking him near the top of the state for the event. He also tossed the shot put 49 feet and two inches.
Kamga’s rise and work ethic brought him to LIU for his freshman year where he started instantly.
“Going from the high school level to college, and starting, that’s magnificent for a young guy,” Powell said. “Not too many people do that. I think the sky's the limit for Bradley.”
Last season, he played eight games, and started seven of them at right tackle. After a quick rise, Kamga felt it was time to move on from the FCS level, and committed to FBS UMass.
“He was looking for a step-up in competition and a better situation,” Powell said. “Think about it, he came in as a freshman and started, so he played real early and the thing about it is he only played his senior year in high school.”
On top of Kamga’s talent, he brings a work ethic and passion for the game highly respected by many surrounding him.
“He’s a student of the game,” Powell said. “He asks a lot of questions and was an over 3.0 kid. He’s a hard worker and stays in the gym doing everything he is supposed to do.”
For Kamga, being a raw talent comes with learning curves and places in need of growth. Powell pointed out a couple different areas of weakness.
“I would probably say he has to get better in the run game,” Powell said. “Maybe his strength and just getting better on the inside (is important), but he can move.”
The Minutemen are adding a lineman who can get to the second level, while also being able to zone block with the scheme very well. Kamga’s addition will help the likes of Rocko Griffin and Juwaun Price find holes to burst through, while also being someone that protects a pocket-passer like AJ Hairston.
“Bradley is technically sound,” Powell said. “It’s just getting out there and getting those reps that he needs so he can perform (at a high level).
“UMass has a gem.”
