'29 MA LB Owen Muldoon Talks Early UMass Offer
2029 Springfield Central HS linebacker Owen Muldoon was excited to land his first D-I offer from the Minutemen.
Owen Muldoon left UMass’ Junior Day last month with something he didn’t have when he arrived, a Division I offer.
The 2029 Springfield Central linebacker received the offer during a meeting with Minuteman head coach Joe Harasymiak inside the football offices.
“We got our lanyards, went up to the players’ lounge and sat down, had a couple of snacks,” Muldoon said. “Then one of the coaches wanted me to go meet Coach H in his office.
“We sat down, he talked about my film and how I’ve had some early signs of good stuff. Then from there, he just offered me.”
The moment represented an early milestone for the Massachusetts prospect.
“I was very happy just thinking about all of the workouts I’ve been through over the years,” Muldoon said. “Summer workouts, lifting and all that, it just shows that it’s starting to pay off.”
Muldoon’s first impressions of Harasymiak and the staff were positive.
“He seems like a very cool dude,” he said. “I really like his energy and the energy between him and all of the coaches. I like their chemistry on what they’re building at UMass. They’re building something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how they do this year and the next couple of years.”
The Springfield native pointed to the program’s recent roster additions and the staff’s vision for the future.
“I just see all of the transfers they’re getting, like Pop (Watson) and Joe (Griffin) and all the transfers,” Muldoon said. “Coach H, he’s new, but he sounds like he knows what he’s doing and I’m very confident that they’re going to be good in the next couple of years.”
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound freshman also toured the football facilities during Junior Day.
“The facilities were really good, especially the weight room,” Muldoon said. “I really liked the football field. We went to see the trainers and I really like how the trainers really take care of their players a lot. We also went to see the locker room. I think it’s very cool looking and I just love the little details in there that stand out to me.”
One detail that caught his attention was the layout.
“I really like how the weight room is next to the football field,” he said. “It really shows and reminds you to really put in the hard work.”
UMass is recruiting Muldoon as a linebacker, and he spent time during the visit with linebackers coach Garrett Gillick.
“He was actually really great,” Muldoon said. “I talked to him for a bit and I really like his energy and love for the linebackers. He sounds very knowledgeable about the game.”
Muldoon hopes to return to Amherst for additional visits as the relationship with the program continues to develop.
“I really like everything about UMass,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going up there for more game day invites and meeting with more of the coaches and seeing how they’re doing.”
He is also planning to visit Boston College for a spring practice and hopes to see several other programs as the recruiting process unfolds.
For now, relationships will be the most important factor as his recruitment progresses.
“Just the coaches’ chemistry, the love for the players and pretty much just all how the coaches are,” he said. “The environment on campus and the atmosphere.”
Muldoon also noted academics will play a role in his eventual decision.
“Academic-wise, I’m really into Accounting.”
