2027 S Rowan Martin High On UMass, Ivy League Programs
East Longmeadow (Mass.) standout Rowan Martin talks about the options he's earned thus far.
Rowan Martin continues to weigh his options following a recent visit to UMass and the 2027 Massachusetts safety has some impressive ones.
Martin was back in Amherst for the Minutemen’s Junior Day earlier this month, where he met with head coach Joe Harasymiak other staff members and spent time around the program.
“The Junior Day was awesome,” Martin said. “I wasn’t there for the beginning part, but I was there for the end and was able to meet with Coach H and my position coach that they recruit me at. I was in the team room eating pizza with all the coaches and I was able to go to the basketball game too. It was very fun.”
The Williston Northampton standout said UMass has been involved for years.
“They’ve recruited me since I was a freshman in high school,” he said. “It’s a coaching staff that truly cares about me and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to go there so many times.”
UMass is recruiting the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder at safety, and he has spent time with defensive coordinator Jared Keyte during previous trips.
“Meeting with them and going over film and seeing what their players do and what I can improve on and the stuff that I do on film and how it matches with what they’re doing has been super awesome,” he said. “Seeing how they see me and where they see me on the field and stuff that I can improve on, that’s been really good.”
Martin has an offer sheet that includes UMass along with schools like Princeton, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Army and Navy among several others.
The East Longmeadow native also made it a point to connect with Harasymiak again.
“Coach H is the man,” Martin said. “You can tell he truly cares about not only his team but his staff and his recruits. He’s always asked me how I’m doing, how my family’s doing, how my recruiting’s going. He’s definitely been super helpful for me in the recruiting process.”
A return visit this spring remains possible.
“I definitely plan on hopefully visiting again in March,” he said. “I’m trying to plan out my March schedule now and visit schools I have offers from and schools that I’m more interested in now, but UMass is definitely one of those schools that I can see myself going back to.”
Martin has also been mapping out visits to several Ivy League programs. Dartmouth will host him for his first official visit in April, and he plans to see Princeton and Penn along with Holy Cross and Navy this spring.
For Martin, the academic piece carries significant weight.
“Ever since I was a little kid I dreamed of playing college football,” he said. “It’s been super humbling to be in this position and be able to choose from not only great football schools but also high academics because that’s super important to me.”
“I think for me, football is going to end eventually,” he said. “I have dreams of playing in the NFL, but if that doesn’t happen then having a degree from a school like an Ivy League school would be very helpful.”
Martin has discussed his timeline with his family and hopes to have a decision in place by early June.
“I think around June 1st, that first week of June will probably be the time I’ll be committed.”
