2027 MA OL GaVin English Recaps UMass Jr. Day
The Springfield Central HS standout called last week's trip to Amherst "amazing."
GaVin English came away encouraged after spending Saturday in Amherst for Junior Day, getting a closer look at how UMass operates and where the program is headed.
The visit gave the 2027 Massachusetts offensive lineman a better understanding of the day-to-day structure inside the building.
“It went amazing,” English said. “I got to go to the facility a little more in depth. They showed us a lot of things, how they operate. I got to go to the basketball game too. That was a good experience.”
The 6-foot-4, 284-pounder took note of the layout and resources inside the football facility.
“Amazing,” he said. “They’ve got a great snack, massage, protein bars in the weight room right next to the training station. You get tape, everything. Everything’s real convenient.”
Beyond the amenities, the staff emphasized organization and balance.
“The coach was saying how they are a morning team,” he said. “They make it so everyone, the first part of the day is all strictly football, so you don’t have to worry about anything else, and then the rest of your day is academics. I like how they help you balance those two things out.”
English also had the chance to spend time with offensive line coach Brian White during the visit.
“Honestly, first impressions, he’s amazing,” English said. “I like him. Got to talk to him, sit down in the o-line room. I love his energy. Nothing but positive vibes from him.”
He was similarly impressed by head coach Joe Harasymiak’s message to the group.
“Great energy,” English said. “When he opened the speech with the parents and the other recruits, he made all the recruits get up front and say thank you to the ones who got us there. I like what he stands for. He just wants to make a change and I like it.”
The Springfield Central High School standout said UMass is trending in the right direction in his eyes.
“I’d describe them as definitely on an upward projection,” he said. “Obviously the transfer portal was big for them. Coach seems to know what he’s doing, and he shows that in how he goes about recruiting and executing day by day.
“I definitely see them being a strong team.”
That trajectory has not gone unnoticed back home, especially with former Central stars Pop Watson and Joe Griffin announcing their transfers to UMass last month.
“It definitely shows me that it is an option,” English said. “Back at Springfield Central, everybody talks about Pop and Joe, so them coming local shows, ‘Hey, don’t just count UMass out. There’s opportunities everywhere you go.’”
English’s offer sheet currently includes UMass and Monmouth. He plans to visit Monmouth and Liberty in March, although the dates are still being finalized.
As for what comes next with UMass, he expects the relationship to continue.
“I’ll probably be up there more. Another Junior Day maybe, possibly a camp. I’m not really sure. Just seeing what the future holds.”
