2026 FL CB Mekell King Talks UMass Offer
2026 Florida cornerback Mekell King was fired up to add an offer from the Minutemen last week.
The UMass coaching staff wasted no time hitting the road and extending scholarship offers when the Spring Evaluation period opened last week.
One of those offers went out to 2026 Florida cornerback Mekell King.
“I found out through a phone call with the DB coach, Coach (Donald) Celiscar,” King told Minuteman Command. “He's just ready to see me work.
“I've still got one more year, so I've just got to make the best out of this.”
The 6-foot, 178-pound King was fired up to add the Minutemen to his offer list.
“I'm excited,” he said. “I'm thrilled. Just blessed, beyond blessed.”
The Wiregrass High School standout also has offers from schools like Boston College, Western Kentucky, Princeton and Fordham.
Coaches have obviously been impressed with what he’s put on tape.
“The film doesn't lie,” he said. “They just see someone who's willing to fly around the field, be a great competitor, and really just try to excel for greatness.”
King’s initial impressions of Celiscar are positive.
“He's a great guy,” said King. “He obviously knows what he's doing.”
King is hoping to make his way to Amherst at some point.
“Hopefully go up there for a visit, take my family up there, see if it feels right, and then commit if everything feels right,” he said.
He wants to get a feel for the environment.
“Somewhere that feels like home,” he said of what he’s looking for in a college. “I'm from Florida, so going up there to Massachusetts is most definitely going to be a big change. I am from the country in Florida; so some good fishing spots, good food spots. But mainly just somewhere where I can be focused.
“I'm not looking for a big name like Miami, somewhere that's going to get me in trouble. I'm just looking for somewhere nice and easy.”
He may not be looking for a big-name school, but several big-name schools have shown interest in him. In addition to UMass, King is considering visits to schools like Clemson, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
But he hasn’t had the chance to hit the road yet and doesn’t intend to until the summer.
