2026 DB David Chiavegato Talks UMass Commitment
2026 Massachusetts athlete David Chiavegato explains his decision to choose the Minutemen.
As the UMass Football program works the Portal heavy this spring, the Minutemen are also putting in work with high school recruiting.
That work paid off in one respect today with the Minutemen adding another piece to its future. David Chiavegato officially announced his commitment to UMass earlier this month.
Chiavegato is the second class of 2026 commit, along with New Jersey defensive lineman Robert Ekins.
The 6-foot, 195-pound junior chose UMass over offers from other schools, including Air Force, Army and Sacred Heart. UMass was his first offer.
“It was close to home,” said Chiavegato. “It was one of those schools that you grow up just thinking about hoping they'll offer you and they were my first offer, so it means a lot that they took a chance on me when no one else did.”
Chiavegato spoke highly of the coaching staff, particularly head coach Joe Harasymiak and defensive coordinator Jared Keyte, and is looking forward to working with them.
“The new coaching staff is amazing,” he said. “They made it a great experience. As much as they had going on with the spring game and stuff, they still made sure that I was all set and that I had everything I needed.”
Chiavegato instantly clicked with Harasymiak upon meeting him.
“I trust him a lot,” he said. “Coach Harasymiak has sent a bunch of safeties to the NFL. So, someone with that much experience, I trust him hiring a guy like Coach Keyte.”
Safe to say, Harasymiak is Chiavegato’s cup of tea.
A local native of Walpole, Mass., Chiavegato plays at Xaverian Brothers High School, a Catholic school located in Westwood, Mass., where he plays wide receiver and safety.
Chiavegato is being recruited to play defensive back in Amherst, but one look at his film and it’s easy to see that he could make an impact at multiple spots if the Minutemen so choose.
As a junior, Chiavegato helped Xavierian to its second straight state title, totaling 1,317 yards of total offense along with 15 total touchdowns. On defense, he registered 48 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups.
Outside of football, Chiavegato participated in track and field.
Chiavegato is in an outstanding academic position, with a 4.00 GPA.
